Inflammation and Leech

Inflammation is the basic surgical disorder. According to Ayurved; it can be co-related with Vrana-shotha. God father of surgery; Shushrut has mentioned Vrana-Shotha in detail scientifically from diagnosis to treatment in important sthana i.e. sutra-sthana in separate chapter. To avoid all surgical disorder by birth; surgeon must know everything about Inflammation.
* There are seven basic line of the treatment for Inflammation according to the stage. And stages are three in number.
* Total 12-Upakramas are mentioned in the first stage of Vrana-Shotha; according to sign and symptoms.
Blood-letting or ‘Avasechan’ is one of the important lines of treatment in the first stage of Vrana-Shotha. Leech is also called Blood-Sucker which is the one of the way of Blood-letting.
At the second stage of Vrana-Shotha we can apply leech to get proper third stage in proper timing to avoid complications by birth.
At the third stage of Vrana-Shotha i.e. Pakvavastha, we can apply leech safely as a Para-surgical sharp instrument for I. and D. at just O.P.D. level also.
In some cases of vrana-Shotha like a case of ‘Kalpaja’ Vrana-Shotha’ or in ‘marma’ or vital organ; and if we cannot identify proper stage Amavastha or Pakvavastha; we can apply safely leech-therapy without complications.

With the help of alone leech we can do Avasechan i.e. Vistravan, Patan i.e. Bhedan, Shodhana i.e. Blood-Letting and Ropana i.e. healing at different stages of Vrana-Shotha.
* If C/S Test is NAD but still there is inflammation; then we can apply leech safely.
* If the site is vital organ, if patient is diabetic, tubercular or immune power is weak, in all stages; we can apply leech therapy safely.
* We can apply leech as a cosmetic view at cosmetic sites because leech incision is inverted Y shaped.
* We can apply leech-therapy as a ‘Vaikrutapaham upakrama’ specially mentioned by the Shushrut to avoid any surgical disorder by birth.
